ALIA has revised it's events page. It includes a state based breakdown and a conferences page.
New standards for fair payment of Australian librarians and library technicians have now been set. Taking account of the current environment, the work value of these employees has been comprehensively analysed: first, via judicial review in the New South Wales Pay Equity Inquiry; second in the subsequent Industrial Relations Commission Full Bench Test Case for librarians, library technicians and archivists. The work value and required skills and qualifications of librarians and library technicians determined in these judgements are global in character and, broadly, relate to the work of the whole Australian library and information sector.
The Board of Directors election was close, with directors votes going to preferences. Gillian Hallam was elected vice-president (president-elect), Roxanne Missingham, Meredith Martinelli and Carol Newton-Smith were elected as directors.

ABSTRACTS
Laurie Lock Lee - State-of-the art in Web Mining
The World Wide Web is the world's largest information repository and growing
at an astounding rate. The volume and richness of information available for
both business and personal use is undoubted. If only it were easier to find
and use it! A survey of CSC staff indicated that over 80% of information
accessed to support day to day decision-making came from unstructured and
often web accessible sources. This result is consistent with similar
industry surveys conducted on unstructured information use.
Web Mining is a natural extension of data mining, though with the web (both
the Internet and intranets) as its primary data source. The unstructured and
textual nature of the web presents some significant challenges, but also
some exciting possibilities. This presentation will review the current state
of the art in Web Mining. The presentation, based on research conducted
under a CSC Leading Edge Forum Technology Grant, will include some novel Web
Mining application examples. One example will show how web mining can help
us understand our positioning in certain markets e.g. BPO, CRM etc. Another
will look inside CSC's 700+ communities to explore the informal side of CSC
around the globe.
Ann Rolfe - The Mentoring Conversation
How can the simple act of spending time in conversation with someone, who
may not even be an expert in your field, help your professional development?
How does a relationship, which may seem contrived and artificial at first,
become an affiliation of confidence and trust? And how does someone who is
not a trained coach or counsellor, elicit the cognitive and behavioural
changes evident in the results of some mentoring programs?
The Mentoring Conversation provides a model of communication that produces
these outcomes. It offers:
* Practical ways to build an effective relationship;
* Four fundamental questions for problem solving, decision making and
strategy planning; and
* A template for mentoring for knowledge transfer, professional, career or
personal development.
Ann Rolfe has been the principle consultant of Synergetic People Development
Pty Limited since its inception in 1987. For over ten years, Ann Rolfe has
helped organizations and individuals reap the benefits of mentoring. Widely
respected as an author and presenter, her training programs have been used
nationally and internationally to develop the skills of mentors and those
who are mentored.
Ann Rolfe is the founder of the Mentoring Network and publishes the
Mentoring News. She is also the author of Mentoring in Australia – a
Practical Approach, Develop Your Mentoring Skills and The Mentoring
Workbook.

Late last year, the Kinetica Expert Advisory Group on Document Delivery
was formed to investigate the current interlibrary lending and document
delivery environment, and the relevance of current trends and issues on
the development of the Kinetica Document Delivery Service ( KDD ).
For anyone unfamiliar with KDD, it is an internet-based system for
interlibrary lending and document delivery that provides a system for
managing payments between members.
To help us in our investigations, we asked a number of KDD and non KDD
libraries to fill out a web survey, to let us know of their library's
experience in interlibrary loan and document delivery.
For KDD members, a copy of the survey form is accessible on line from :
http://www.nla.gov.au/kinetica/ddsurvey/usersform.html
<http://www.nla.gov.au/kinetica/ddsurvey/usersform.html>
For non KDD members, a copy of the survey form is accessible on line
from : http://www.nla.gov.au/kinetica/ddsurvey/nonusersform.html
Please feel free to fill in the survey form. We would certainly love to
hear from you regarding your interlibrary lending and document supply
experiences and requirements. Results of the survey will be analysed and
incorporated into recommendations by the Advisory Group for the future
direction and development of the KDD service.
If you do respond, please respond by Friday July 2. Your response will
be treated in confidence. The library name will only be used to identify
the location and type of your library, which will help us collate
responses.
As there is no facility to save the web form at various stages of
completion, you may wish to work with a printed copy of the form, and
only input into the web form when you have all the information ready.
Please contact me on (02) 6262 1683 or email me at ayeo@nla.gov.au if
you need any further information on the survey.
Thank you.

Advanced Diploma of Library and Information Services
If you are an experienced library technician did you know that there is
a library qualification, which will recognise competencies you have
already attained, and enable you to develop your skills even further?
The Advanced Diploma of Library/Information Services is one of the
qualifications in the newly revised Museum and Library/Information
Services Training Package. It aims to recognise the competencies you
have achieved through study and work, and to enhance and develop your
knowledge and skills as a working library technician.
Colin Gray is managing a project for TAFE NSW which is considering
offering this qualification. To determine whether it is feasible to
introduce the Advanced Diploma and to assist in future planning TAFE NSW
is trying to gauge how much interest there would be in such a course.
Should it be offered face-to-face, distance, online or in a variety of
modes so that it can be accessible to as many people as possible.
If you or any of your colleagues are or might, in the future, be
interested in undertaking such a course, could you please forward your
comments direct to Colin Gray at cvgray@ozemail.com.au by 9 July.
If you have any queries or would like further information about the
Advanced Diploma contact Marie Murphy in ALIA National Office

Free Trade Agreement reports and analysis: The Joint Standing Committee on Treaties (JSCOT) recommended formal ratification of the Australia – United States Free Trade Agreement. Interim report (Tabled 24 June 2004) http://www.aph.gov.au/Senate/committee/freetrade_ctte/index.htm Intellectual property rights and the Australia-US Free Trade Agreement. David Richardson, Parliamentary Library, Economics, Commerce and Industrial Relations Section. The Australia US Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA) covers a number of issues and this paper deals with Chapter 17 on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs). It first examines AUSFTA’s attempts to entrench or enhance Australia’s already strong IPRs. The general economic arguments are examined as well as the Australian and US interests in stronger IPRs. Stronger IPRs protect rights holders from competition and so sit awkwardly with the aims of free trade. Some specific concerns have been expressed such as AUSFTA’s implications when producers use copyright protection measures to practice price discrimination around the world and against the interests of Australian consumers.
