Subject: Ozlib Announce

This email is being sent to former members of the ozlib-announce list.
It is to ask you whether I should start up the ozlib announce list
again. It is also a probe to determine if the email addresses I have on
the list are still valid.

Sixteen months ago I started having trouble sending out the list.
Sending the list would fail during the night, and many, and often all
of the members of the list, would fail to get the postings. The
messages could not be regenerated and it was unclear who had got them,
and who had not, out of the 600 members of the list. These problems
became progressively worse and I concluded that they were caused by a
combination of the use of a very old computer (seven years), poor
bandwidth to my home (a phone line) where the computer lived, and
software which became unstable in these conditions.

I had hopes that I could resurrect the list fairly quickly but this
proved not to be possible and I put it to one side until circumstances
changed.

Some time ago I acquired a new computer, an iMac, better software
(postfix and macjordomo) and as of 10 days ago a broadband connection
which had just become available (at last!) in my area. I am now
reasonably confident that I can maintain the list should it be
restarted.

One problem I had previously is that most of the material posted was
not sent to me directly. I had to ferret it out by being a member of
other lists. I often wondered whether the lack of material posted
directly to me indicated a disinterest by those who had news to tell to
make use the list as a publicity vehicle.

It may also be that ALIA's lists, particularly ALIANews makes "Ozlib
Announce" redundant?

So I can decide whether to start up again I would like your comments as
to whether this is a useful service.

I have set ozlib@tony-barry.emu.id.au (note the change of name) as an
open list so please be circumspect in your replies as they may go to
all members 600 members. You may prefer to reply to me directly.

Initially I have set this as a moderated list. There is a good reason
for this. As many of the addresses will have changed I could
potentially be faced with a bounce from every changed address going
into my mail box! If, for instance, 50 people's addresses have changed
I would get 51 messages for each message going to the list!

This is a macjordomo, NOT a majordomo list so send list instructions to
-

	macjordomo@tony-barry.emu.id.au

and put the commands in the body of the message not the subject. The
software obeys the usual commands. If in doubt a good message to start
with would be HELP :-)

Over to you for your comments.

Regards

Tony

Subject: Restarting ozlib

The result of my query were -

117 addresses bounced as they had changed or were gone
23 people wanted the list restarted
2 wanted it restarted as existing lists don't carry commercial messages
1 said it was a good list but they had moved jobs and were no longer
interested.
5 said they were no longer interested.

So I am now looking to restart ozlib as a newsletter going initially to
the 475 people remaining.

This message will allow me to do another check on the address list
before doing so.
