My Genealogy

When I was a child my mother used to tell me that I was a "Fifth generation Australian" and that this was something to be proud of. No doubt it did not occur to her that the 2,000 generation Australians might not have been impressed by such a Johny-come-lately.

It was not until my cousin, and only first cousin, Grahme, was in contact in1987 that I learnt more. He had details of the family, that his father, my Uncle Keith, and he, had researched. So I gained a greater interest. Perhaps it was discovering that I was descended from a long line of failed thieves and murderers had an influence!

I did a bit of research in the late 1980s using the microfiche NSW BDM, and the Pioneers Register in the Chifley Library at ANU. I also quizzed my Great Aunt Min shortly before her death to find out more about my Mother's side of the family.

There are castles!

On the Barry side of the family, my father's, it seems we were the du Barri's and were part of William 1st invasion of England. An Earldom ensued, first in Wales and then in Cork, Ireland. The head of the clan was the "Great" Barry or Barrymore but the last Earl of Barrymore was a wastrel and the title lapsed. The castle remains, Barryscourt Castle , at Carrigtohill, Co. Cork. I had not heard of it but it was discovered by my son Simon when he visited Ireland in 2002.

My mother was a Maclean. I was always told I was "entitled to wear the tartan", and that I was descended from the black scots of Mull who had intermarried with survivors of the Spanish Armada. Duart Castle is in Mull is the Clan ancestral home.

The data

This is a work in progress. Back around 1990 I had put what I had found into some software called PAF - Personal Ancestral File. Late in 2002 I downloaded GEDitCOM and transferred the data to it. it has a variety of export formats including web formats which I have used in the link below.

The software integrates graphics and URL links into the database and export them to the website so I expect to expand the somewhat lean material as I find more.
